The Weekly JLT - 11th May 2022
It's been a while, but we're still munching! Meet the new The Weekly JLT - the email newsletter for foodies in & around Jumeirah Lakes Towers!
%welcome%
Hello & welcome to our new “virtual abode”! We’ve been a bit quiet on the email newsletter front during the past months, because we switched platforms and also took some time out to relax and eat. We’re back now and this is the first of our new-style weekly newsletters. New look, still full of food & JLT.
What’s cooking? We’ve got a little round-up of the latest openings in JLT, plus falafel, Thai-style rotis, a skateboarding Thai chef (not sure about this, she might just be cooking and not skateboarding), and a retro-gaming brunch (anyone for Donkey Kong?!).
Knives & forks at the ready! Let’s munch!

Have you tried the latest restaurants, cafes, & bars to open in our neighbourhood yet? We’ve recently added Desi Bistro in cluster G, an outpost of the original Desi Bistro in Bur Dubai, and Bawarchi in cluster X, which is part of a chain of Indian restaurants originating in - you’d have never guessed it - Bangkok, Thailand. The most recent high profile opening, though, is surely Nonya at the Taj JLT, which boosts the neighbourhood’s pan-Asian food offerings and also boasts a stunning terrace. GQ paid them a visit when they opened and you can read what they thought here.
Know of any new restaurants in the ‘hood or coming to the ‘hood? Tell us!

Bait Maryam: If you haven’t tried this award-winning JLT stalwart yet, what are you waiting for? You’ll find chef Salam and her team in cluster D. If you just can’t get enough of her cooking, check out this recent feature in Gulf News and try your hand at Salam’s Palestinian falafel recipe.
McGettigan’s JLT: You can’t really go wrong with the Irish Pub at the voco Bonnington in cluster J, but if you want to be part of a very special night and get a glimpse of traditional Irish culture, don’t miss the 2022 Dubai Rose Selection on Friday, 20th May at 4 p.m. McGettigan’s JLT will host the selection ceremony for the official Dubai Rose, who will represent Dubai’s Irish community in the prestigious annual Rose of Tralee event in Ireland. Expect lots of very well dressed folks and fine food & drinks.
Streetery Food Hall: Streetery is, of course, JLT foodie life, but in May there’s an extra-special reason to pay them a visit - Thai Banana Rotis! Streetery’s rotis are the stuff of legends anyway, but if you want to experience them turned into a popular Thai street snack, you’ve got to head to cluster D before the end of May.

Counter-culture & Thai food: Fancy a bit of counter-culture, music, and art, but don’t want to miss the taste of JLT? Fret not, Cafe Isan’s chef New to the rescue! Chef New @chefnewkha will be cooking for you at @breaktheblock.me - a street food block party, part of the 2022 Dubai Food Festival @dubaieats, 13th & 14th May. If you’re a party-pooper, but still in love with chef New’s food, just head to any of the two Cafe Isan outlets in JLT: The OG in cluster B or the one with the booze in cluster P.
Congratulations, Pitfire Pizza! Everyone (surely?!) knows Pitfire Pizza in JLT, but did you know that they expanded and recently opened a branch in Arjan? Check it out here!
Solidarity with the Deliveroo & Talabat riders! You may have heard that in recent weeks, riders working for Deliveroo and Talabat, went on strike on separate occasions to protest their working conditions and wages. If you’re interested to find out more about why the riders ain’t riding you can check out this post by the FoodSheikh, this post on Facebook, this article in Khaleej Times, or this post on Twitter. We’ve said this for a while, but it’s probably worth repeating: Log out & order direct - your delivery riders will thank you!
